Another Colored City.. and this One's Pink! Jaipur, India
What's up with all the cities in Rajasthan being a single color? First it was the blue city of Jodhpur, then it was the golden city of Jaisalmer... and now we've arrived in the pink city of Jaipur. Yes, of all colors, Pink. And not a nice pink either... sorta a bight baby pink edging towards neon pink has been splashed on pretty much every building in the old town of this bustling Indian metropolis. Sure, here and there you find a highlight of yellow or blue and even the occasional unpainted concrete block color, but most of this city conforms to the dress code. Apparently, the pink is associated with hospitality and the painting of the city was done in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales. And it stuck. For what it is, we have to admit that it looks okay but it certainly isn't the color that we'd choose for our house or future home town.
In addition to being pink, Jaipur is the capitol of Rajastan and the home of 2.5 million people. Now that we've been traveling in India awhile, we're starting to see similarities between places. Major fortified walls and a fort or palace seem to play into every city in one way or the other. Jaipur has wider roads with straight boulevards rather than the winding back alleyways of Jaislamer or Jaipur, but the markets and street stalls are similar. We visited the City Palace Complex and the Hawa Mahal, also called the water palace. The later was the place where royal women were supposedly able to watch the happenings on the street without being seen. To accomplish this, the windows were covered with a concrete lattice with beautiful designs, but very small holes. We couldn't see much out of them in our attempt to look out onto the street, but I guess you get what you are given.
Without a whole laundry list of tourist sites to see, we've had some time to just sit back, relax... and EAT! I believe we may have previously mentioned it before in this journal... but the food in India is absolutely fantastic. Mark, of course, complains that it's mostly vegetarian, but if you have to eat vegetarian... this is the way to go! Our new favorite is the Thali - an indian meal consisting of all sorts of yummies like Dal (lentils), Papadams (Crisp flat appetizers), Roti (Indian Bread), Raw Vegetables, Curries of various types, and Raita (Yogurt mixed with anything from fruit to vegetables.)
From here, we'll loosen our belts and head south to do a bit of Tiger Spotting...
