In my Rear View Mirror
Utrecht, The Netherlands

One of my very few rants in this journal (besides work being just laboriously difficult!) is my distaste of the Dutch driving habits. Well, it all came to bear this morning when I was rear ended on the way to work. I was minding my own business driving slowly in the normal traffic jam on the A2 when in my rear view mirror I saw the car behind me coming at a blazing pace. I knew he was going to hit me.

And hit me he did. It pushed me forward and I was either going to hit the car in front of me or one on either side… so what do you do? I hit the one to my right. Of course we all pulled over, called the police, exchanged insurance information – all in Dutch. Thank goodness I could write in English on the accident report. Of course this is the one day that I’d left my wallet at home with my Drivers License. At one point, the Police Officer said, “You do have a drivers license, don’t you??” But in the end, I was allowed to head home to make the phone calls to the lease and rental car companies. The car has visible damage but nothing that prevents it from being 100 percent operable.

I think everything is going to work out just fine. The damage department at the lease company told me all I had to do was send them the  accident form and they would work the rest out. Let’s hope it’s that easy. The one thing I can say is this has shaken my confidence....
