Initially we had hoped to spend 2 years in the Netherlands. Our goal was to spend all available weekends and holidays traveling around Europe seeing the most expensive continent in style. We gave it good go and ended up living in Holland for 14 months before deciding to pack it in. As it turned out, Holland just wasn’t the place for us. We chalk it up to inappropriate jobs and itchy feet.
We’d always planned to set off on an around the world adventure after our time in Europe, but our early departure has put us a bit in a lurch... and we had to scramble to figure out the plans for where we would be heading and in what time frame. There are numerous things to consider.... weather patterns, holidays, airfare costs and "I have always wanted to" desires that must be taken into account. What we’ve come up with is, of course, subject to change. All of it depends on when we run out of money, get bored with traveling, and/or find that we don’t really want to do what we initially thought we wanted to do. In other words, we really have no idea where we will end up, but this is what we’re thinking about at this point in time. November/December 2003 - A week or so of chill out time in the Netherlands before heading to Turkey on a Package Holiday. We look forward to exploring Turkey – the great city of Istanbul, the Mediterranean beaches, and the region of Cappadocia. Perhaps we will even get South to see Tom and Ollie in Cyprus. From Turkey we will travel west into Greece and then into Italy. We will fly back to the UK from Venice, Italy on December 20th to spend the holidays with Mark’s family. January/February 2004 - Sometime in January we plan to return to Europe. We’d like to spend some time in the Czech Republic and Germany before flying to Egypt. We’ll spend a few weeks in Egypt and Jordan - visiting the pyramids and Petra will be highlights of our month in the middle east. We’ll be returning to Seattle in February for my grandmother’s 93rd birthday. March/April - We’ll be making a quick stop on Maui Hawaii before heading to Australia. We can’t wait to dive the great barrier reef, climb the Sydney harbor bridge and visit with our friends John and Johanna. We also look forward to visiting the outback and swimming with the dolphins in Perth May/June and Early July will be spent in South East Asia. We plan to spend at least a week in Bali and plan to travel overland to the island of Java in Indonesia. From there we’ll fly north to Singapore – a must is a Singapore sling at Raffels.... and continue overland into Thailand and Cambodia. At some point we have to get back to the UK for Mark’s brother Paul’s wedding. Things get a little fuzzy beyond this point. Perhaps we’ll spend some time in Scotland (or some other destination?) while we are back in Europe but then we’d like to visit both India and Nepal. From there we will continue onto Southern Africa for a beach break in Zanzibar and a Safari. Mark would like to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro but if that is to be a reality is yet to be seen. In the new year (2005) we’d like to visit Central and South America if we’re still excited about traveling and have a few pennies left to our name.
