Beach Paradise
Zanzibar, Tanzania

You know the photos. They are the ones in almost every holiday brochure advertising beach-y places. Crystal clear waters in all shades of blue lap quietly against white sand beaches while palm trees sway overhead. Beach Paradise. It's where we all hope to end up when we leave home, but somehow most of time when you get to your destination, the beaches are great, but not quite that picture perfect image that was advertised when you were flipping through the books at the travel agents.... Not this time!!

0537:

Nungwi beach at the northern tip of Zanzibar island has everything that turns a place with a beach into a beach paradise! The water is absolutely stunning and the sand is glaringly white. It was so beautiful, in fact, that we think it must be one of the (if not THE) most beatiful beaches that we've ever visited which is saying a lot since we've visited quite a few amazing beaches! For those of you who've been in Cancun or some of the larger Caribbean resorts, this place has that kind of warm, beautiful water, but without the huge tourist resort feel. In Nungwi, there are actually quiet places where you can be the only person on the beach!

0540:

All of this is especially wonderful given the fact that we weren't sure if we were going to be able to enjoy the beaches of Zanzibar. On the ferry ride over from the mainland as it was pouring rain!! Even while we were in Stone Town, it rained for a good few hours every day. However, although we experienced typically tropical weather at the beach with the occasional (but brief) thunder shower or two, for the most part the sun was shining and it was great swimming weather!

0538:

Our days were spent lazing on the amazing beaches, reading and relaxing... although we did manage to make it to the pub to see Saturday's football games on the international satelite. Ironically, we'd seen the previous week's Villa game on the Ferry over,(This was the obvious replacement for any sort of safety video or annoucements!) so we had to settle for the Blues game in the pub with all the locals, most of whom were cheering for Charlton. (Sorry, Paul!)

0539:

From here, we head back to Dar Es Saalam and then onto Nairobi, Kenya where we hope to arrange a multiple day safari in the Maasi Mara.
