Africa's Must See Livingstone, Zambia "Must See" tourist attractions in Africa are few and far between. Sure there are plenty of things that you "should do" in Africa - Safari, for example, but there are numerous parks to choose from... Krueger (South Africa), Etosha (Namibia), Chobi or Moremi (Botswana), etc, etc, etc. Unlike Europe where you see the standard tourist attractions, (Big Ben, The Eiffel Tower, Coliseum, etc.) Africa is mainly about traveling through and seeing how people live while admiring the natural beauty of this amazing continent. However, one of the "must see" on any central African itinerary is Victoria Falls.
The falls are shared by and form a boundary between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. We decided to visit the falls on the Zambian side because we'd planned on continuing our travels through Zambia. Plus, the backpackers in livingstone, jollyboys would arrange a free Zambian visa for anyone who called 48 hours in advance and booked a visa package with them! It ultimately saved us over $90 in visa fees! (Not small change on a travelers budget!!)
The falls themselves are mighty impressive regardless of which side you see them from! They are basically two times the size of Niagara falls in all respects. Twice as much water flows over the falls, it's twice as high and twice as long (spanning 1.7 kilometers!). However they have a very different feel. Instead of a big open viewing over the river, you look down a long winding crevice in the Earth which seems to be bleeding water!
We explored the falls with Edwardo and had a wonderful walk around the park. The rainbows of the falls are particularly beautiful. We also admired the century old bridge that crosses the victoria falls canyon. It's a train track that is still actively used both by trains and bungee jumpers. In fact, during Mark's last visit to Africa he claims he bungee jumped from that exact same bridge. (Heide, however, has yet to see the photos or the supposed video!)
There are a large number of "adrenaline activities" on offer at Victoria Falls, but mainly because Mark participated in most of them on his last trip through Africa... we'll pass this time around and continue our journey by heading to Lusaka, Zambia's capitol.
