Killing Freetime in Freo
Freemantle, Australia

20km away from downtown Perth is the charming port town of Fremantle. Known to Aussies everywhere as "Freo"... it's the perfect tourist destination. It sports a wonderful "cappuccino strip" where one can stop to sip and beer/coffee and/or sample any number of culinary delights from fresh made cake to gormet-ly prepared kangaroo. The buildings have been tarted up with fake "Euro facades" that, coupled with the al fresco dining, give the place a cosmopolitan, European feel. It's a nice, relaxing place to spend a few days.

So, that's what we did. And, we drank "Flat Whites," (Lattes for all the Starbucks fans out there... as far as we can tell a latte here is the same things as a flat white except it comes in a tall skinny glass instead of a mug and perhaps has a bit more milk and a bit less coffee. We prefer the extra bit of coffee....), Local beers, and just hung out. The Fremantle market was good for a wander and we ate fish and chips on the harbor at fisherman's wharf.

The big tourist attraction or "thing to do" in Freo is visit the Fremantle Prison. Built in the 1800s by convicts, for convicts,... (can you imagine being sent over on an 6 month voyage for stealing a loaf of bread and then having to build your own jail that would keep you captive?) The prison was used until 1991 and opened for tours in 1992.

0363:

While the convict history from 100 plus years ago was interesting,... just knowing that 13 years ago the facility was used to house some of western Australia's worst felons was mind boggling. The cells are tiny and there is no plumbing in the cell blocks at all. This left the use of the "toilet bucket." (Enough said.) Standing in the yards surrounded by razor wire looking up at the gunman's tower was probably the closest experience that we've ever had to actually being behind bars. Not nice.

Although we've enjoyed our time here, tomorrow we'll be heading out to the "legendary" Rottnest Island.
