My Goodness, Myella!
Baralaba, Australia

We've just spent the last 3 days at an outback cattle station. Like all good farms -- the one we visited had a name.... Myella... and my goodness did they keep us busy during our stay! The major activities were as follows:

Horseback riding - After breakfast, the major morning activity was horseback riding. We'd saddle our mounts and ride out onto the farm to muster the cattle, find the bull, count the steer, and/or treat the dairy cows with pesticide treatment. It was great fun!! Mark experienced his first "instructed riding" ever and made excellent progress over the three days.... he's well on his way to becoming a proper horseman.... but hopefully not one of the 4 of the apocalypse. Heide was reminded how much she loves riding and would love to take it up again when we return home.

0340:

Motorbike lessons -- All good and proper farms have motorbikes... it's the "fast way" of getting around a large property and they're used for gathering horses, transport to the sunset view point... and vrooming around the Myella dirt bike track! Our 1st afternoon at Myella consisted of a lengthy lesson... (Heide's a bit of a hopeless student... although she was able to putz around in the end.) We were also able to take a farm tour on the motorbikes during our stay, although Heide didn't see much except what was exactly in front of the handlebars!

0341:

Farm work -- Staying on a farm is not all fun and games.... there is also work to be done!! We helped milk the cows and sampled the warm, fresh milk.... yum!, "harvested" chicken eggs, replaced fences, filled dangerous holes and searched for "vermin." The last of these items was a specific request of Marks..... we were on the hunt for the deadly red back spider - which we found thanks to Lyn's help!

0342:

General fun -- There was no spare time at Myella. When we weren't engaged on one of the activities listed above we were star gazing, swimming, sleeping, eating the best homemade food we've had in ages (and some of the best Beef we've ever had!) or nursing the baby joey kangaroos that are hand raised on the farm. One night we were treated to a special town run where we joined the Baralaba community in an evening trivia night! Our team took second place and had a great time answering questions, but mingling with the "country folk" and learning about "who was who" was a good crack. Like all small towns, everyone has a story!

0343:

Sadly, we had to leave Myella and anticipated a 5 hour wait in the bus terminal for our overnight bus north to Airlie beach. However, when Kate, another guest who was at Myella heard that we'd be hangin' at the bus terminal... she invited us over to her house in the evening. Lyn from Myella also joined us... and we all enjoyed a wonderful dinner and had a good number of laughs! Kate, thanks for adding something special to the end of our wonderful Myella trip! We had a great time... and hope we can return the favor one day!

One last thing... today is Heide's Mom's birthday... so... Happy Birthday Mom!!
