We'll meet you by the Tiger
Oslo, Norway

One of the primary motivators for visiting Oslo on Pinksterdag weekend was that our friends Kirsten and Manuel were going to be in Norway at that same time! How fun to meet up with friends some "random" place in the world! Somehow we manage to do this quite frequently with Kirsten and Manuel... we've met up with them in Seattle, Boston and now Oslo... and also look forward to hopefully visiting them one day soon at their home in Denver!

0060:

The weather was beautiful and we all met up at the big tiger statue outside of the Oslo central station. Mark and I were still in Friday clothes... our luggage had not arrived over night.  But little could darken our mood, it was summer in Oslo and we happened to be in town on Music day in  the city. Venues all over town were hosting free concerts with all different kinds music. We found a bar in the city with a outdoor terrace within earshot of the ethnic music stage where we sat for several hours enjoying a few beers, catching up on life and listening to everything from belly dancing music to accapela Norwegian folk singers. (No joke!)

0061: 0062:

In the afternoon we somehow managed to motivate ourselves  to leave that cozy terrace and do some sightseeing. We walked across town and out to Vigeland park... or the "naked park" as I call it.  It's a wonderful place with all sorts of statues of naked people in different poses and symbolizes the many aspects of humanity. I remember seeing the park when I was 11, but I think the meaning was lost on me. It is a really a unique and beautiful place.

0063:

Later in the afternoon, Kirsten and Manuel had to get back to visit with some other friendsEso we said goodbye  to them at the station and headed were headed back to our hostel when we saw something that was quite shocking. Everyone knows that there are lots of "interesting people" that hang around stations. I don't know what it is, but it just seems to be a gathering place. Anyhow, both Mark and I had previously noticed that there were a number of whacked out looking people around the Oslo central station, but we didn't think much of it.  However, when we saw people free basing heroine we took a closer look and noticed just how MANY whacked out people there were. It appears to be quite a problem in Oslo... and with the way people had it out in the open on the street, apparently no one really seems to care. Interesting, though. All the heroine addicts and the overflowing garbage cans really shattered that stereo typical view of Scandinavia as a pristine, and perfectly clean place.
