Change of Scenery
Eindhoven, The Netherlands

I took a double decker train today to a job interview today. I feel like I've ridden trains all over this country, now,... primarily for job interviews. Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and all the stations in between are becoming familiar to me,... but being upstairs on a double decker train was a new treat. The Netherlands is one flat country and I have to admit that most of the scenery around the tracks was pretty bland this grey and icky day. Still there are parks, lakes, tree farms, rivers and canals that make the ride interesting. I remember when we first came to live in this country we were so amazed to see such open space in a country that is so densely populated.

0018:

We feel like we are living in a densely populated country when we are in our "new" apartment. Mark and I were "kicked out" of our corporate housing at the end of December and needed to pick something we could afford. The apartment is nice. It's right in the center of town and is fitted very well with all sorts of new, modern furnishings! But it's small,... a bedroom, front room, bathroom, and kitchen. Pretty much everything we need but tiny, tiny, tiny by American standards or even by British standards.

We also have a few complaints. First off, since we are right in the center of town, it is LOUD! There's a bus stop right outside our bedroom window and buses drive by all night. We aren't far from the pub street so weekends get a bit crazy... people yelling, etc. In addition, the curtains in the bedroom are white and there is a HUGE street lamp outside. It's brighter in our room at night than in the daytime! We've hung the duvet cover up over the drapes in an attempt to block out some of the light and it seems to work but it can't counter act the church bells that chime every 15 minutes from the church across the street. I think the worst thing is that the hot water isn't currently working and the shower is horrible. Good thing it's only for three months!! And, like I said... it's affordable.
