A Visit with the Folks
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Mark's parents and sister were here this last weekend. It was wonderful to see them on their way back to Britain from picking up Clare in Germany! We enjoyed some leisure time sitting around and catching up... and also did a bit of sight seeing. On Saturday we got up had a big fry up and headed North on the train to Amsterdam. The weather was nice and we enjoyed watching the scenery as the train whizzed by.

0271:

Once in Amsterdam, we wandered through town over to Anne Frank's House. It was the one tourist thing in Amsterdam that all of us really wanted to do and it was incredible!! It's been quite some time since any of us have read Anne's diary... and perhaps now we will read it again with new perspective. The space that those people lived in for two years is incredibly small and the "hidden doorway" to hide the entrance to the secret house was brilliantly designed.

After a late lunch, we took a long walk through the city just taking in the scenery. Amsterdam, despite all the stoned tourists acting stupid and urinating in the canals, is a really beautiful city. The trees were in their late fall stage and lined the canals beautifully and as the day changed into night some of the bridges were lit up with white lights. Wonderful!

Sunday morning we drove about an hour from home to the town of Arnhem. During World War II, this town was the location of a major battle and we went up there to see the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek. There were some really interesting artifacts in the museum.. It's amazing how primitive the warfare was when it seems it wasn't so long ago. We also wandered down to the war cemetery which was incredibly sad and beautiful.
