First Anniversary, New Country One whole year! We celebrated our one-year anniversary by renting a car and taking a long weekend in Brugge, Belgium. The city is absolutely fabulous! It has changed little since the Middle Ages... due to the silting of the Zwin River that runs through town. Wonderful! The roads are all small and winding and the buildings are gorgeous! There are horse drawn carriage rides through town (as there are in almost ever Tourist City!) but in Brugge they seem particularly suitable. Listening to the clip-clop of the horses’ feet, I could imagine what Brugge was like in the Middle Ages!
Our hotel was nothing to write home about, but the location was wonderful! We did a lot of pottering, exploring, and sitting in cafes enjoying wine, Belgian beer & chocolates and, of course, coffee! In one pub we tried the pickled haring that was being served with the beer and we actually liked it! Even Heide enjoyed the Belgian beer! We look forward to touring some of the Trappist breweries some day in the future! Some of our favorite things from our time in Brugge were the views from the canal boat tour and how we stumbled upon the ancient city walls!
The best part of the trip was dinner on Saturday night. They say Belgian food is French cuisine with German portions... Heide had poached salmon with a hollandaise sauce and Mark had a steak with Roquefort sauce. It was a long, leisurely dinner with wonderful wine! The restaurant was in an old grotto built in the 1200s and had a wonderfully intimate atmosphere.
When we got home, we found out that Price Claus (The Queen’s husband) had died. From what we could tell from Dutch television, he was a wonderful man who had a great sense of humor. It seems that he had been quite ill. The country and the royal family are in now in mourning. What a way to end an otherwise wonderful anniversary trip.
