Late Summer Sun Alanya, Turkey We are in Turkey but still not really traveling... This second week on the road will be spent sitting on the beach soaking up the late summer sun and (undoubtably) spending too much money on beer.
Getting here was quite the adventure. We hiked out of the vacation park -- about a mile then it was an hour on the bus to the train station, a 30 minute train ride to the airport, a 4 hour flight to Turkey and a 2 and a half hour bus ride to the small coastal resort of Alanaya where we are staying. We arrived at 5 in the morning just in time to hear the first call of the day to morning prayer. (Our first taste of travel in an Islamic country.)
Then again, I guess that is not exactly true... arriving a the airport in Turkey we had to apply for tourist visas. (Read: Stand in line and hand over the cash!) The Dutch paid 10 Euros, Mark was subject to 15 euros and as an American, I paid 100 US Dollars for a three month multiple entry visa. Wow. We figure that it must be some sort of reaction to the current US immigration policy or foreign policy... interesting none the less. Also in the news today is the US deciding to put sanctions on Syria... all the more interesting while we are here in this region.
On Friday we are hoping to head north to the Capadocia region of Turkey or to Cyprus. Both Mark and I are ready to get started with the real adventure.
